![]() ![]() I have been trying to get this work for a week, but in vain. It offers satellite imagery, aerial photography, street maps, 360 interactive panoramic views of streets (Street View), real-time traffic conditions, and route planning for traveling by foot, car, bike, air (in beta) and public transportation. This means that, even if I align HD map with satellite imagery from Google Earth (manually with hand), this alignment wouldn’t work for satellite imagery from Google Maps. Google Maps is a web mapping platform and consumer application offered by Google. You can also notice that the satellite imagery used between the two are different. You can see that the point ‘A’ is exactly at the center of the intersection in Google Earth, whereas the point ‘A’ is not at the center of the intersection in Google Earth. The satellite imagery source for Google Earth and Google Maps are different, meaning that the satellite imagery from these two places themselves, have a misalignment of ~5 meters or greater.įigure 5: Point ‘A’ marked on satellite imagery from Google Earthįigure 6: Same point ‘A’ marked on satellite imagery from Google Maps My eventual goal is to align HD map with satellite imagery from Google Maps. The Worldview tool from NASA's Earth Observing System Data and Information System ( EOSDIS) provides the capability to interactively browse over 1000 global, full-resolution satellite imagery layers and then download the underlying data. However this was not possible, as aligning in certain part of the map, caused misalignments in other parts of the map. View and interact with near real-time global, daily satellite imagery in NASA Worldview. I tried to align by hand, the HD map with satellite mode of Google Earth, through scaling and translation. However, when I switched to satellite mode of Google Earth, the alignment was lost.įigure 4: HD map overlay on satellite mode of Google Earth (Red arrows indicate some areas of misalignment) But the web version is best.Figure 1: HD map overlay on terrain mode of Google Earth Download the program Google Earth, if necessary. So, let's show you how to find out how to tell when Google Maps image was taken: The program allows you not only to view aerial images in a convenient format, but also to find out the dates of the survey of the active part of the map. Therefore, the best proven option is to use the program Google Earth for PC or the web version of Google Earth instead. Not all Google Maps features are directly available in the web app or mobile version of the service. This is the time when the aerial photo was taken or the Google Street View vehicle took the photo on the street. But it is important to check whether the data are up to date: it is possible that for some time everything has changed dramatically, and the building or street is no longer in reality.įortunately, with Google Maps and Google Earth app, you can check the date and time when the photo was taken. Since Google Maps and Google Earth store images of our planet in high resolution, it is often still possible to zoom in on the house on the map, to see the details. ![]() This is a process called photogrammetry and, according to Matt, we’re increasingly able to automate our photogrammetry process using machine learning to help accurately. Almost all open spaces on our planet are already fixed on Google Maps, but not everywhere high detail is available: so, you will not see inscriptions, small objects, unpopular streets. Google obtains commercially-available satellite imagery from a range of third parties, and our team stitches the images together to create a seamless map, Matt tells me. Is it possible to find out the specific date of capture?
